FHR Lim A Po Institute for Higher Education (FHR) is an institute for higher education established on March 9, 2000, the 100th birthday of, and as a living memorial to, Frederik Hendrik Rudolf Lim A Po, a passionate advocate of lifelong learning.

FHR's vision is that by activating the opportunity to enjoy higher education that meets international standards, we contribute to the development of a well-functioning and prosperous society.

Based on this vision, FHR's mission is to contribute to a well-developed society by providing students with higher education at international standards in an ethical and ambitious learning environment, thereby further developing and strengthening their professional and vocational competences as well as their commitment to the public interest.

FHR consists of two academic business units (institutes), one at graduate level and one at undergraduate level.

The FHR Graduate Institute for Higher Education has two schools: FHR School of Governance, Law and Humanities and FHR School of Accounting and Management.

FHR Undergraduate Institute for Higher Education has one school, FHR School of Business.

The two academic business units have separate management teams with powers derived from the Rector of the Institute, who is the link between the academic business units and the board.

FHR attaches great importance to ensuring the quality of its education and compliance with international standards. This is reflected in the accreditations of its educational programs by leading accreditation organizations, such as the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) and the partnerships with internationally renowned educational institutions such as Erasmus University Rotterdam, Maastricht University and Leiden University.

In line with these standards, FHR uses modern teaching methods in a stimulating learning environment where teachers continuously strive for the improvement of students and themselves. The passion for learning that characterizes FHR promotes from day one a learning path aimed at 'a better understanding of the world' and the realization of the talents of each individual student. It is the motivation for a career development that starts with a bachelor's degree and continues seamlessly in a master's degree.

The value proposition
FHR's value proposition is to provide young and mid-career professionals with higher education that meets international standards at significantly reduced international rates.

FHR is unique in this respect in the Surinamese market. There is no other institute that offers internationally accredited programs. FHR expects its market share to grow because the international quality of its education and the lower costs thereof, will strongly reduce the need to pursue higher education abroad. FHR programs have clearly proven to be of value to individuals, organizations and society as a whole.

The 3 Schools

The third school, which was acquired by FHR from Hogeschool InHolland in October 2012, primarily provides education at the bachelor level, specifically a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program. Since 2015, this program has been structured as a broad bachelor’s degree with 10 specialization tracks. In addition, this school offers a pre-bachelor program as a bridge between secondary and higher education, intended for students who do not meet the entry requirements for the BBA program.

An important strategy of FHR is the progressive integration of the master’s and bachelor’s programs, allowing students to transition seamlessly into a master’s program after obtaining their bachelor’s degree.

In addition to the multi-year training programs, FHR also offers Executive Education on (among others) 21st century subjects that are relevant to and meet the needs of the Surinamese business community. To strengthen the rule of law, FHR provides a series of master courses (annually).

Studying at FHR

Starting your studies at the FHR School of Business is a starting point for career development.

The BBA programme of the School of Business lays a solid foundation for a wide range of opportunities for further professional development in the first two years. During this period, the education is uniform for one and a half years and is oriented towards becoming acquainted with the theory and practice of the phases of the life cycle of a company. This is followed by an initial specialisation of six months in one of the main directions. Those who choose to work full-time after completing the main direction and to (temporarily) terminate their studies after successfully completing a test are entitled to an 'Associate Degree'. This degree is co-accredited and can in principle be regarded as the end point of an initial career development trajectory. The education in the main direction is followed by a six-month internship with the aim of both deepening theoretical knowledge and gaining practical experience. After the internship, a choice can be made from a number of specialisations, each lasting one year.

The specialisations have a threefold function: they deepen the knowledge and skills of the professional domain that the student prefers, they form a frame of reference for writing the graduation thesis and, because they are tailored to this in terms of discipline (Management, Accounting, Governance, Human Resources and Law) and level (guaranteed by international accreditation), they form a suitable approach and stepping stone to one of the master's programmes offered by FHR.

The FHR bachelor's degree and a period of relevant work experience, which most students gain almost entirely during the bachelor's program, automatically grant admission to the master's programs. The specializations of the bachelor's and master's programs therefore form two seamlessly connected phases in the career development of FHR students.

All FHR programs are nationally and/or internationally accredited. This guarantees the quality of FHR programs. And this distinguishes FHR from other programs offered in Suriname, where it is not guaranteed that the quality of education meets other than their own internal standards.

The Bachelor's program of FHR is accredited by NOVA on the basis of a previous international accreditation by IACBE. Of the Master's programs of FHR, the MBA program is accredited by the international body IACBE and the application for national (NOVA) accreditation is pending. The MoA program is accredited by two international bodies AACSB and EQUIS and the MPA program internationally by EAPAA. The MHRM program is certified by SHRM.

In December 2017, the official certificates of the NOVA accreditation of the Master of Accounting (formerly Executive Master in Management Accounting) and Master in Human Resource Management programs were awarded to the FHR Institute for Higher Education by the National Accreditation Body (NOVA). These accreditations are valid for six and seven years respectively, starting on September 15, 2017. These programs have also been awarded the national quality mark for quality education.
