Studying at FHR

The basic program

The two-year basic programme is composed of solid knowledge and skills components. The basic programme covers the various disciplines of business and the business cycle serves as the common thread. The phases of the business life cycle are treated in the curriculum during the first three semesters as three themes, namely 'business planning', 'business operations' and 'business consolidation'. At the beginning of the programme, the characteristics of these phases are treated separately, but as the programme progresses, they are considered together. This is done, for example, in projects, assignments and cases.

The Major and graduation specialization

At the second level, you must choose from ten specializations that correspond to the four main specializations (Finance, Management, Law and International Business) of the second year of the basic program. The internship takes place in the third year. In the fourth year, the program is concluded with a graduation assignment, based on practice-oriented research, in which the specific knowledge linked to the specialization in the third and fourth years is placed on top of the broad basis that students have acquired in the first two years. In this way, you are able to place the specific knowledge in a broader context than that of your own field of expertise, and to make a well-considered choice for a specialization.

Associate degree

After successfully completing the first two years of the program, you can choose to obtain an Associate Degree in the chosen major. For this, a final test will have to be taken. After successfully completing the associate level, you will be able to, as a starting associate professional

Bachelor of Business Administration programma

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program is lectured over four years and consists of two levels:

Level 1: Professionalization (Basic program and majors)

In the basic program, the various disciplines of business aspects are dealt with, with the business cycle running as a common thread throughout the program. The processes of the life cycle of the company are addressed in the curriculum during the first three semesters as three themes, namely business environment and planning, business planning and operations, and business consolidation. At the start of the program, the characteristics of these processes are presented separately, but as the program progresses, they become coherent through projects, assignments, and cases. Theoretical basic knowledge is central in the form of professional competences related to the core subject areas of the BBA-program, combined with the development of an integrative view and generic competences.

The basic program lasts one and a half years, or three semesters. After the third semester, the student continues with the major International Business. In addition to International Business, the student can also choose from the other majors after the basic program—Finance, Management, and Law (all three in Dutch)—although they are required to take the “Hogeschooltaal” B2-level test in Dutch. This well-considered choice is facilitated by the basic program, which provides good insight into the content and professional field of the different specializations.

After successfully completing the first two years of the BBA-program, the student can opt to obtain an Associate Degree in the chosen major. Upon successfully passing the associate level test, the starting associate professional is able to:

  1. Recognize and describe existing connections among ideas or solutions in the introductory concepts of traditional areas of business.
  2. Communicate effectively via multiple channels of exchange and interaction, including oral and written.
  3. Recognize the skills required in planning, organizing, controlling, and leading a successful team in a business scenario.
  4. Recognize business, ethical, and cultural issues within a global environment.
  5. Demonstrate an ability to find and use reference tools and utilize them in decision support.

Level 2: Qualified to start (Specialization)

At level 2 (years 3 and 4), the program becomes specific through in-depth knowledge subjects and integrated assignments. From the third year onwards, the program varies by specialization, depending on the major chosen in year 2. For Finance, the specializations include Management Accounting, Financial Sector Management, and Financial Accounting; for Management, they are Marketing Management, Small and Medium Enterprise Management, Business Management, and Human Resource Management; for Law, the options are Law and Governance and Law and Business; and for International Business (English), the specialization is International Business and Management.

In the third year, an internship takes place, and the fourth year concludes with students creating, presenting, and defending their final thesis based on practical research. The specific knowledge linked to the specialization in the third and fourth years is built upon the broad knowledge base acquired during the first two years, enabling students to place their specialized learning in a broader context and make a well-considered choice for their specialization.

After successfully completing the bachelor level, the starting bachelor professional will be able to:

  1. Apply major concepts within the traditional vocational areas of business,
  2. Apply strategic planning skills to effect a change initiative in a business scenario,
  3. Utilize research skills and apply decision-support tools to support business decision-making in a global environment,
  4. Contribute to the development of a high-performing team and collaborative environment,
  5. Obtain and process information to make integrated decisions and solve problems,
  6. Deliver effective and professional communication using a variety of channels,
  7. Deal with conflicts of private and public interests, and
  8. Apply legal, ethical, and economic standards in business decision making.

Curriculum

International Business

The major International Business continues after the basic program of the BBA-program. In this major, you work on an additional specialism, in which you are prepared for in-depth knowledge courses and integrating assignments that lead into the internship and, subsequently, into the final specialization resulting in the qualification “professionalization competent.”

At level 2 (3rd and 4th year), the study program becomes more specific through in-depth knowledge subjects and integrated assignments while continuing with the chosen specialization. The internship takes place in the third year and is designed to give you the opportunity to gain practical experience within the framework of the BBA-program, as well as to test the theoretical knowledge and professional skills you have acquired. Furthermore, the internship helps you further orient yourself regarding your career choice and develop the appropriate attitude and behavior in a work situation, transforming you into a competent “business professional.”

It is therefore important that the internship matches the professional profile and competence map of the major you have followed and anticipates the professional profile and competence map of the specialization you intend to pursue after completing the internship. By the third year, having completed the internship in the first half of the year, you will have gained good insight into the content and professional field of International Business, after which you will continue with the specialization International Business and Management.
